Abstract

In this paper, to improve the compression ratio, we proposed a new still image coder based on DCT that needs just four symbols by using stack-run algorithm. Since the proposed still image coder uses only four symbols, it is very simple to encode and decode the still images over the JPEG coder algorithm. It is also easy to be combined with other entropy coders such as huffman coder or arithmetic coder based on the probability of symbols. In order to evaluate the compression ratio of the proposed coder and compare the performance of our coder with that of the existing JPEG coders, we perform experiments using lena and boat images We show through experiments that our proposed coder achieves much better compression ratio than the JPEG baseline mode.
